Main Research Lines / Participation in SusPlast:

  • Biological conversion of C1 gases (CO, CH4, CO2) into bioplastics. Metabolic engineering to increase the efficiency of the process
  • Use of poly-extremophile chassis (e.g. Exiguobacterium sp.) for the degradation of plastics. Metabolic engineering to increase the metabolic capacities of the bacterial chassis to catabolize PHA, PHB, PET, etc.
  • Improvement of the bacterial production of bi-functional intermediates (dialcohols, diacids, etc.) by means of systems biology, metabolic engineering, and synthetic biology for the synthesis of bio-sustainable plastics
